The Guam Coastal Management Plan receives local and federal funding to protect and enhance the quality of Guam’s coastal environment while maintaining a balance of sustainable uses of resources and environmental capabilities. Some examples of completed and current projects are listed below:
Current Projects Guam Coastal Nonpoint Source Pollution Plan
Guam is currently developing a program to address the problem of non-point source pollution (NPS). For more information on Non-Point Source Pollution, please see these sites: Guam Environmental Protection Agency (GEPA) Environmental Emergency Response Plan
As the first phase of a multi-year project to produce a comprehensive Environmental Emergency Response Plan for Guam, the Bureau’s contracted consultant completed a report on the analysis of historic environmental impacts of previous disasters; evaluated responses and capabilities; and provided recommendations for completion of a final plan. The development of a final plan is underway.
From these draft recommendations, the Bureau also succeeded in preparing a report for Guam’s first Coastal Damage Assessment with the assistance of other Government of Guam agencies. This island-wide assessment was used to collect and report environmental data for coastal hazards following Typhoon Chata’an in July 2002.
Guam Seashore Reserve Plan.
The Government of Guam is currently developing a seashore reserve plan, to put into law the requirements and mandates of the Territorial Seashore Protection Act of 1972. The Seashore Reserve Plan Task Force is currently developing a draft plan that will be presented to the Guam Seashore Protection Commission sometime this spring.
