The Guam 2009 1st Quarter CPI of 105.6 shows a -0.5 percent decrease over the 4th quarter of 2008, and an increase of 4.5 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  The All Items Less Food index decreased by -1.0 percent, Energy by -5.0 percent and Services by -2.1 percent, as compared to the 4th quarter 2008.  All Items Less Food and Energy increased by 1.0 percent, and Commodities Less Food by 0.9 percent, as compared to the 4th quarter 2008. 

Overall, prices have increased by 4.5 percent as compared to 2008.  The purchasing power of the dollar is now $0.64 when compared to base year 1996.
 
The Food group index of 114.3 shows an increase of 1.7 percent over the preceding quarter and 12.9 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Cereal product prices have decreased -1.9 percent over the preceding quarter but increased 46.4 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Fish and Seafood product prices have increased 8.4 percent over the preceding quarter and 29.6 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Fats and Oils product prices have decreased -10.1 percent over the preceding quarter but increased 25.6 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Fresh Fruit product prices have decreased -0.8 over the preceding quarter and -3.0 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.
 
The Housing group index of 109.0 shows a -2.9 percent decrease over the preceding quarter but increased 7.9 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Electricity product prices have decreased -11.9 percent over the preceding quarter but increased 18.7 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Furniture and Bedding product prices have decreased -4.6 over the preceding quarter and -5.2 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier. Housekeeping Supplies prices have increased 4.7 percent over the preceding quarter and 6.7 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier 
 
The Transportation group index of 101.5 shows an increase of 0.5 percent over the preceding quarter but decreased -2.0 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.  Motor Fuel prices have decreased -5.1 percent over the preceding quarter and -29.2 percent when compared to the same period one year earlier.
 
The Apparel and Upkeep group index of 101.6 shows a decrease of -1.6 percent over the preceding quarter.  The Medical Care group index of 101.6, Recreation Group index of 101.9, and Education and Communication group index of 98.7, and Other Goods and Services group index of 99.3 percent, shows an increase of 0.8, 0.9, 0.1, and 1.6 percent respectfully over the previous quarter. 
 
Over 97 percent of all product prices across all groups and subgroups are included in this report.
